Child 3 - John Plott
George and Margaret Plott List of Children
Birth, Death, Last Will & Testament and Grave Location
(3) John Plott, Sr. (March 19, 1768 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina to January 18, 1844 {Administration Bond dated February 5, 1844}). He married first Isabella Bigger (c. 1772 to c. 1796) on June 3, 1793 (no children) and second Sara Lucinda Gilliam (September 19, 1779 to c. April 16, 1830) on March 6, 1799. All three died in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. They could be buried in Cold Water Lutheran Church Cemetery, Cabarrus County, North Carolina. Children with Sara: Thomas Plott - History is unknown, Robert Gilliam Plott married Elizabeth Winecoff, Rhue Plott married James Klutts, George Franklin Plott married Sarah Correll, John Plott, Jr. married Elizabeth Stough and Emeline Walter-Propst, Pheby Ann Plott married Daniel M. Walker, Hiram Barnard Plott married Eliza Phillips and Victoria West, Sarah Plott married - History is unknown, Henry Plott married Sarah Motley, Jack Plott - History is unknown. (Some family genealogists report that Jack was a nickname for the above listed son Jack. In 1928, James Iverson Plott recorded a son Jack. At this time, until fully documented, Jack remains on the list of children.), and Allison Hartville Plott married Parabell Leet.
(March 19, 1768 to January 18, 1844) Dates from Grace and James Iverson Plott’s - Plott History Book.
On the list of children for George and Margaret Plott, it was written for John “Alive in Cabarrus” County, N.C.
I suppose if I had to guess where John Plott was buried, I would use the facts of history. From North Carolina estate records, John died in 1844. During the same year his son, Robert Gilliam Plott died. A grave marker for Robert Gilliam Plott is located in Cold Water Lutheran Church Cemetery, Cold Water, Cabarrus County, North Carolina, USA. As Robert Gilliam Plott died about twelve (12) months after his father, I would guess that they were buried in the same cemetery. I have no proof. The biggest problem I have with my guess is that John's estate filing was processed in Rowan County and not Cabarrus County. I don't know why.
On “... of the Estate of Archibald Beggs Deceased Dated the 14th Day of December, 1786”, John Plott was listed, along with his father George Plott, and his sisters, Sophia and Elizabeth Plott.
John Plott's estate documentation can be found in N.C., Estate Files, 1663-1979, Rowan County. Unfortunately, the files does not contain a Last Will and Testament for John. Within the file are two Administration Bond, which the signers agree to the responsibility of settling John’s estate. The first Administration Bond was on “this 5th day of Feby. Anno Domini 1844” and signed by Robt. G. Plott, Alexr. Patterson and James Klutts. Robert was John’s son. James Klutts was the husband of Rhue, John’s daughter. At this time, I do not know who Alexander Patterson was to John Plott; neighbors, friends or relations. The second Administration Bond was on “this 4th day of February Anno Domini, 1845” and signed by Daniel M. Walker, John M. Long and James Honeycutt. Daniel M. Walker was the husband of Pheby Ann, John’s daughter. At this time, I do not know who John M. Long and James Honeycutt were to John Plott; neighbors, friends or relations. John’s son, Robert Gilliam, died within twelve months of John’s death. It was recorded that Alexander Boyd was paid $6.00, “for making the coffin for dec’d (John)”.

Second Spouse, Information and Record
B. Married Sara Lucinda Gilliam (September 19, 1779 to April 16, 1830) on March 6, 1799 in Cabarrus County, N.C. Birthday and marriage date from Grace Plott and James Iverson Plott’s - Plott History Book. Death date is from “The Raleigh Register” (Raleigh, N.C.), Monday, May 3, 1830 issue, Page 3, reported that John Jr. had accidentally shot and killed his mother, Sara. Here is a quote from the newspaper, “On Friday night, the 16th inst. John Plott, Jr. of Cabarrus county in discharging his gun in the dark, to scare some vagrant wretch from the premises, accidentally shot shot mother.” “She was found lying speechless, the ball having struck her on the temple. Surgical aid was immediately procured; but little hope was entertained that it would be of any avail. She had probably gone out, at the time of night, to look after some clothes that had been washed the previous day and were hanging out to dry, …” “Mrs. Plott is an amiable woman, a kind and affectionate parent, and highly respected and esteemed by all who know her; and this melancholy event has shrouded her family, who best know how to appreciate her worth, and to whom her loss will be irreparable, in the deepest affliction. - Journal.
Children
The following children for John and Sara were listed in Grace Plott and James Iverson Plott’s - Plott History Book. The names were placed in chronological order in the Plott History Book more than likely by James Iverson Plott. For the measure of research time, I am limiting the information on the children to the place and date of birth, place and date of death, spouse name and marriage information. Birth dates and death dates were taken from information available on tombstones or from Grace Plott & James Iverson Plott’s book, if available. Dates are verified with archived documents, if available. At this time, I am not adding military duty, spouse dates and their children. The focus of this report centers on John Plott.
As James Iverson Plott wrote in his ‘Preface’ of the Plott History book, “Here we agreed to write in the completion of the history of the Plott relatives. Miss Grace assuming the North Carolina territory of her great-grandfather Henry Plott, and I that of my grandfather, John Plott.” James acknowledges that he was responsible for his line. This would mean including his first level aunts and uncles (the daughters and sons of John and Sara); eleven children in total. I give James Iverson Plott my full faith in the accuracy in the list of children for John and Sarah. Remember, James was born in 1844 during the time period to know or know of his aunts and uncles.

1. Thomas Plott - As of this date, I have not located Thomas. In Grace Plott and James Iverson Plott’s - Plott History Book, Thomas was listed as the first child. As I mentioned prior, I give James Iverson Plott my full faith on listing Thomas as a child of John and Sara. What happened to Thomas? At this time, I do not know. Further research needs to be continued. If anyone has information on Thomas, I ask that they release and share the information.

3. Rhue (aka Rhuey, Ruey, Reccy, Reecy, Reece, or Polly) Plott
Born in Cabarrus County, N.C. c December 2, 1807 from Grace Plott and James Iverson Plott’s - Plott History Book.
Died in Cabarrus County, N.C. c June 12, 1846 I don’t remember where I got this date; however, it is consistent with James being mentioned in John Plott’s estate file of 1844 and James remarrying to Martha/Matty Garner in 1848. I will attempt to relocate where I found Rhue’s death date. As of this date, no grave location found.
Married James Klutts on July 30, 1827, in Cabarrus County, N.C. From marriage license.
Bondsman: Joseph Klutts
Witness: Washington Harris
James Kluttz was mentioned in John Plott’s estate papers. The first Administration Bond was on “this 5th day of Feby. Anno Domini 1844” and signed by Robt. G. Plott, Alexr. Patterson and James Klutts.
James Klutts would remarry after Rhue’s death. He married Matty Garner on December 18, 1848.
Any children born to James Klutts prior to Rhue death date, would be considered Rhue’s children not Matty’s.
Rhue may have been a twin. This would be consistent with the 1810 census of listing 2 (two) Females - Under 10. Information needs to be verified.

5. John Plott, Jr. (Not Jack or Jackson, see explanation below.)
Born in Cabarrus County, N.C. c January 20, 1812 From Grace Plott and James Iverson Plott’s - Plott History Book.
Died in Cabarrus County, N.C. c March 23, 1871 John Plott Family Bible Records, which was microfilmed in the N.C. Archives-N.C. Digital Collection.
Last Will and Testament & Estate Settlement Papers were filed in N.C. Archives.
No tombstone record.
A. Married Elizabeth Slough on April 8, 1835, in Cabarrus County, N.C. Marriage records; however, April 4, 1835 John Plott Family Bible.
Bondsman: D. M. Walker
B. Emeline Walter-Propst (previous husband was Wilson Propst) on May 1, 1860, Cabarrus County, N.C. Marriage records; however, May 3, 1860 John Plott Family Bible.
Bondsman: John A. Long
Witness: N. Slough
I want to pause here and discuss the use of the name “John Jack or John Jackson” for John Plott, Jr. and/or John Plott Sr. I have reviewed marriage records, Last Will and Testaments, Estate Settlement Papers, Plott Family Bible, newspaper clippings, and Cabarrus County deeds for John Jr. and John Sr. I find NO legal instance that either personally used “John Jack or John Jackson” for his name. Now, I know that folks will point to the death certificates for John, Jr’s. sons, Chalmer and William M., which “Jackson Plott” was written for “Name of Father”. The “Informant Name” on Chalmer’s death certificate was Mrs. C. L. Mossman (Clarence L. Mossman). Mrs. Mossman was Chalmer’s daughter Laura Pauline. The “Informant Name” on William's death certificate was R. J. Walters (Riley James Walters), who was the husband of Florence Virginia, a daughter of William M. The problem with using the death certificates as proof of John Jr. and/or John Sr. names with the name Jack or Jackson are as follows:
a. First, neither John Jr. and/or John Sr. ever used for legal documentation Jack, Jackson or the initial “J”.
b. Second, the Informants for both death certificates used different names for Chalmer and William M’s “Name of Mother”, who was Elizabeth Stough/Slough. Laura Pauline used the name of Sarah for Elizabeth. Mr. Walters used the nickname Betsy for Elizabeth.
c. Third, Chalmer personally documents his father as John Plott and his mother as Elizabeth Plott on his Cabarrus County, N.C. marriage license to Mary A. Stough, “...the 20 day of October A.D., 1867…”
d. Forth, the N.C., Marriage Records, 1741-2011 for William M Plott reports, “son of John & Elizabeth” with his marriage to Mary E. Dove, “14 Dec. 1868 m. 17 Dec. 1868 by Alexander Blackwelder, J.P. (w) David Winecoff, Reg.”
e. Fifth, the marriage record for Elizabeth Plott, Chalmer and William’s sister, reads as follows, “Daughter of John Plott Dead and Elizabeth Plott, dead ...at Office in Concord, the 29th day of September, 1872…”
f. Sixth, marriage record for Mattie A. Plott, Chalmer and William’s half-sister, reads as follows, “...Daughter of Jno/John Plott and Emeline Plott...” January 7, 1888.
Historian Jerry Taylor advised, “Jack and Jackie were common nicknames for John just as Mollie was for Mary and Sallie for Sarah and Patsy for Martha etc etc. They were "bad" about nicknaming back then.” Jerry Taylor further comments, “But that doesn't mean we should ever substitute nicknames for actual legal names!” and, “My own grandfather "messed up" his mother's parents’ names on the death certificate.”
I, the author of this report, would minimally classify the use of Jackson as a nickname for John Jr. and not a legal name for John Jr.
If anyone has ‘documented proof’ that John Jr. ‘personally’ used “Jack, Jackson or the letter J”, I ask that they release and share the information. I shall not argue with you, if you have a strong opinion about John’s name. My research style is to report what the legal documents disclosed.
I am standing by James Iverson Plott’s list of his first level aunts and uncles. John (Jr.) and Jack were two individual brothers. John was born in 1812 and married Elizabeth Stough. Jack was born in 1820 and disappears for a reason we as researchers need to do our investigation and find him.

Jack did NOT marry Elizabeth Stough. His brother John married Elizabeth Stough.
I want to pause here to discuss John Jr.’s name again and the use of “Jack or Jackson”, as a nickname or middle name for John Jr. and/or Sr. I’ve noticed with some online family trees that Jack has been swiftly removed from Grace Plott and James Iverson Plott’s Plott History Book list of children for John and Sarah Gilliam-Plott and combined with John Jr. and/or Sr.’s name. Online web searches are NOT our only source to find information about family members. We must access archive documents from the time period in courthouses, libraries and microfilm. Part of the error in combining the two brothers names comes from the 1920s to 1930s and from the book, “The Annals of Haywood County” by W.C. Allen, published in 1935, which has been described as “woefully inaccurate.” The Annals’ story erroneously combines the information of John Jr. and Jack.
Now, the 1830 census did accommodate two (2) Males Under the Age of 10: Jack and Allison H. We have two sources accounting for Jack:
a. First, Grace and James Iverson Plott’s - Plott History Book and
b. Second, the 1830 census.
We need to continue efforts to find archive documentation on Jack Plott, tenth son of John and Sarah Gilliam-Plott.

Census
The following are the U. S. census for John Plott and family:
Married Isabella Bigger(s) June 3, 1793 - No known children.
Married Sarah Gilliam March 6, 1799 - All listed children are her offspring.
1800 census: Salisbury, Cabarrus, N.C.
Free White Persons - Miles - 26 thru 44: 1 (John 32 yrs)
Free White Persons - Females - 16 thru 25: 1 (Sarah 21 yrs)
Number of Household Members: 2
1810 census: Cabarrus, N.C.
Free White Persons - Males Under 10: 2 (Robert 6 yrs & George 5 mos)
Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 15: 1 (? or Thomas 8 yrs?)
Free White Persons - Males - 26 thru 44: 1 (John 42 yrs)
Free White Persons - Females Under 10: 2 (Rhue 3 yrs & Unknown female)
Free White Persons - Females - 26 thru 44: 1 (Sarah Gilliam-Plott 31 yrs)
Number of Household Members: 7
No slaves
Thoughts:
1. Thomas was reported in Grace Plott and James Iverson Plott’s - Plott History Book as born in 1802. Technically, Thomas should have been in the “Males Under 10” category. Or, is this another boy, who was “10 thru 15”?
2. Rhue aka Reecy reported in from Grace Plott and James Iverson Plott’s - Plott History Book was to have been born in 1807. Rhue was correctly reported in the “Females Under 10” category. Who was the second Female Under 10? Another daughter or a girl living in the household?
3. Rhue may have been a twin. This would be consistent with the 1810 census of listing 2 (two) Females - Under 10. Information needs to be verified.
1820 census: Cabarrus, N.C.
At this time, I am unable to locate an 1820 census record for John Plott. It would be nice to review an 1820 record for John and his family to answer the accounting of his sons and daughters.
1830 census: Cabarrus, N.C.
Free White Persons - Males - 5 thru 9: 2 (Allison 6 yrs & Jack 9-10 yrs)
Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 14: 1 (Henry 11 yrs)
Free White Persons - Males - 15 thru 19: 1 (Hiram 14-15 yrs)
Free White Persons - Males - 60 thru 69: 1 (John 51 yrs)
Free White Persons - Females - 15 thru 19: 1 (Pheby 16 yrs)
Number of Household Members: 6
No slaves
Thoughts:
1. Robert and Rhue are found to have married prior to 1830; ergo, they are not on this census.
2. George Franklin, 20 years old, was not recorded on this census. He was documented marrying Sarah Correll in 1832. At this time, I do not have information on when George moved to Illinois.
3. John Jr., 18 years old, was not recorded on this census. John, Jr.’s not being recorded on the 1830 census with his father John, may have something to do with the events of John Jr. accidentally shooting and killing his mother Sarah Gilliam-Plott on April 16, 1830. John may have been living with someone else during 1830 census.
4. Sara, 13 years old, was not documented on the 1830 census for a Female - 10 through 14 category. Where is she? Or, what happened to her?
1840 census: Cabarrus, N.C.
Free White Persons - Males - 15 thru 19: 1 (Allison 16 yrs)
Free White Persons - Males - 20 thru 29: 1 (Henry 21 yrs)
Free White Persons - Males - 70 thru 79: 1 (John)
Slaves - Female - 36 thru 54: 1 (Unidentified woman)
Number of Household Members: 4
Thoughts:

2. John reports slave woman the 1840 census. I presume, as Sarah Gilliam-Plott died in 1830, John needed help with household chores. No documentation of her name was recorded in John’s estate papers when he died in 1844.
