Child 1 - Mary Plott
George and Margaret Plott List of Children
Birth, Death, Last Will & Testament and Grave Location
(1) Mary Plott (c. 1762 to c. 1811-1814, recorded on the 1810 census, but she died before her father, who died in 1815). It has been reported that she was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania and baptized at Moselem Church in 1763. She married John Campbell, Sr. (c. 1755 to c. 1807-1809, he was not recorded on the 1810 census). Both died in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Children: George Campbell married Elizabeth - maiden name needs to be confirmed, Daniel Campbell married Rosena Willis, John Campbell, Jr. - History needs to be confirmed, Andrew Campbell - History is unknown, Mary Polly Campbell married James Wilson, and Robert Henry Campbell married Leah Lutz.
On the list of children for George and Margaret Plott the following was written for her, “Both dead leaving George, Daniel, John, Andrew, Polly aka Mary married to James Wilson, Henry Campbell - died before father - out of state.”
On the list of children for George and Margaret Plott the following was written for her, “Both dead leaving George, Daniel, John, Andrew, Polly aka Mary married to James Wilson, Henry Campbell - died before father - out of state.”
I further want to pause and talk about family trees for a Mary Margaret Plott, born circa 1775 in Somerset, Pennsylvania, who eventually married John Huffman. She was not a daughter of George and Margaret Plott of North Carolina. NO! This is an error. Think about it for a moment, George and Margaret were living in North Carolina in 1767. Why would they travel back up to Pennsylvania, give birth to a daughter, leave her to be raised in Pennsylvania, while they return to North Carolina and continue a family. NO! Mary Margaret Plott, who married John Huffman was not a daughter of George and Margaret Plott of North Carolina. Mary Margaret Plott was from a Pennsylvania Plott line. Families that are related to Mary Margaret Plott, who married John Huffman need to proceed to researching her true Pennsylvania parents. It is an insult to Mary Margaret Plott, who married John Huffman, to link her to wrong parents. Please give honor to Mary Margaret Plott, who married John Huffman and find her true parents.
Spouse, Information and Record
Like we did for Mary, let us consolidate to the probable years that John could have died. John was listed as the head of household on the Lincoln County, N.C. 1800 census. The enumeration date of the 1800 census was August 4, 1800. John and Mary’s last son and child, Robert “Henry” declared on the Murray County, GA 1850 census that he was born c. 1803; ergo, John was still alive in 1802-1803 for Henry’s conception. As mentioned with Mary, she was listed as the head of household on the Lincoln County, N.C. 1810 census. John died between c. 1804 to c. 1809.
As John (Sr.) died prior to 1810 and Mary died prior to 1815, their son Henry became an orphan at about age 12 years old when Mary died. Two documents were recorded for John Campbell (Sr.) being deceased and guardianship of Henry Campbell being appointed to his older brother John Campbell (Jr.). The following two documents are found in the N.C., Estate Files 1663 - 1979, Lincoln County, Campbell, John.
1. “State of North Carolina, Lincoln County Know all Men by these Presents, That John Campbell (Jr. and brother of Henry Campbell) & James Wilson (Son-in-law of John Campbell Sr.) are held and firmly bound unto ...Sealed with our seals, and dated this 18th day of January Anno Domini 1819. On the List of Children for parents, George and Margaret Plott, it was remarked that Mary was "dead before father",
so we know that she died prior to 1815. Mary was listed on the 1810 census as the head of household.
It is deduced that Mary Plott-Campbell died between the enumeration of the 1810 census
to before George Plott's death approximately March 1815.

The following names help with research and connection to this family include; however, are not limited to: Campbell, Plott, Wilson, and Lutes/Lutz.
On the Lincoln County, N.C., Old Deed Records Book 19, Page 143, a signature for a “John Campbell” witnessed a deed, which George Plott, grantee, and Adam Farbough, grantor. “This Indenture made the 19th of May in the Year of our Lord 1797…” More than likely, the John Campbell signing witness to the transaction was Mary Plott’s husband, John Campbell, (Sr.); however, no proof. The signature would not be John Campbell, Jr.’s signature, because he would have only been approximately ten years old.

I think that Polly was a nickname for the daughter, so they could tell mother Mary Plott-Campbell from daughter Mary Campbell. I believe the reference on the list of children for George and Margaret Plott of ‘out of state’ was for Mary Campbell-Wilson and her husband James Wilson. In the book, “Counties of Clay and Owen, Indiana, Historical and Biographical”, by Charles Blanchard, Editor, Chicago, F. A. Battey & Co. Publishers, 1884, the family reported, “Samuel Wilson, farmer and stock grower, second son and sixth child of James and Mary (Campbell) Wilson, natives of the State of North Carolina, was born in Lincoln County, that State, October 17, 1824. His parents came into Indiana in the year 1834, and located in Monroe County, where they resided two years.” Page 943.

NOTE: Some Ancestry . com trees have saved “Mary Benson” as being Henry’s mother. This is WRONG. As John Plott and Elias Plott, executors of George and Margaret Plott’s estate, listed Henry as a child of their sister Mary Plott-Campbell, I give credence to knowing their nephew Henry.
Married Leah Lutz/Lutes, “State of North Carolina, Lincoln County. Know all Men by these Presents, That we Henry Campbell & James Wilson ...
