Land Deeds & Court Records -
Mary Plott and John Campbell
We thank Jim Campbell for this discovery.
I have ordered a 1817 map of the Town of Lincolnton from the North Carolina Archives. I hope that it shows lot no. 15 SE on the square.
The photo with the January 24, 1801 marriage record for Elias Plott and Charity Conrad discloses that John Campbell was the bondsman for his brother-in-law. John's wife, Mary Plott, was the sister of Elias Plott, which was proven on the List of Children for George and Margaret Plott. This marriage record establishes a family connection with John Campbell, the Plott family. and a handwritten signature for John Campbell.
In Archibald Beggs/Baggs 1789 estate settlement file, a John Campbell purchased butter, 2 pair of shoe making (tools of some sort) and 4 pair of boots mending and shoes mending (kit or tools or some sort). The purchase account of September 3, 1787 handwritten signature of John Campbell matches that of the John Campbell's signature on the above mentioned marriage record.
From the matching handwritten signatures, we can conclude that John Campbell, brother-in-law to Elias Plott and husband of Mary Plott purchased shoe making tools from Archibald Beggs/Baggs. Now, the fact that John Campbell has acquired shoe making tools, we can also conclude that John revealed professional interest to us as a shoemaker.
